Getting There

GettingThere1.png

This rural area of Auvergne is very dear to Audrey. We have no doubt you’ll fall under its spell as well, however it’s true it remains quite a remote, poorly connected location, so don’t expect to rely exclusively on public transport. You might also consider teaming up with other guests to car-share, let us know if you’re considering this option and we can put you in touch with other like-minded guests.

Flying Option 1

The closest airport is Clermont Ferrand (CFE) - domestic flights only, with a possibility of catching one of 3 connecting flights per day from Paris CDG

What to do in the Region

Auvergne is a region very close to Audrey’s heart, that she considers home (and which Jonathan has grown to appreciate). We highly recommend that you make the best use of your time here and continue exploring this beautiful Region.

With its hilly, volcanic landscapes, Auvergne is full of surprises. At the crossroads of north and south of France, it combines historic heritage, picturesque villages and breath-taking natural sites. Around Clermont-Ferrand, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure: unusual places, memorable hikes and incredible landscapes all add up to an unforgettable stay.

Here are some of our must-dos:

Travel1.png

Puy-de-Dôme

The region takes its name from this dormant volcano, making it a real landmark to discover around Clermont-Ferrand! There are several ways to get there: if you don't feel like walking, take the Panoramique des Dômes, a train specially chartered to take visitors to the summit. But if you fancy a bit of exercise, there are two hiking trails: the Chemin des Muletiers, which will take you to the summit in 45 minutes or 2 hours, depending on where you start from, or the Chemin des Chèvres, which takes 1 to 2 hours. Through these lunar landscapes, you can enjoy a splendid view of the entire Puys range.

For the "adrenaline" option, you can also plan a paragliding flight.

Travel10.png

Usson and Issoire

The two town closest to our reception have actually plenty to offer!

Perched on a volcanic peak, the village of Usson has been voted one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. For children, an "explorers" trail is available from the tourist office. At the end of the 16th century, Queen Margot was imprisoned in the fortress of Usson, reputed to be "the strongest place in the kingdom" with its 20 towers and 3 walls. During your visit, follow the salamander, which will lead you to the volcanic organs at the top of the peak from where you can admire a magnificent view of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy, the Cézallier and the Livradois mountains.

Travel3.png

Vulcania

This is a theme park not to be missed around Clermont-Ferrand. On a human scale, its mission is to combine educational activities with fun. As well as a wide range of attractions and rides, Vulcania offers events on the theme of volcanoes and meteorological phenomena. Experiments, immersive films and interactive areas will delight young and old alike!

Travel4.png

Salers village

Listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Salers is a splendid village in the Cantal department. Perched at an altitude of 950 metres, it dominates the entire valley. You'll be amazed by the beauty of the place: turreted houses, volcanic stone ramparts, pointed gates, charming town houses... It's enough to take you right back to the Middle Ages!

Travel5.png

The thermal springs of Vichy

Vichy is a town not to be missed around Clermont-Ferrand, renowned for its thermal springs. The town has nine of them, which you can discover during the summer season. The spa capital is also a beautiful city, with its 'Art Nouveau' style architecture.

Travel6.png

Le Puy-en-Velay

The European capital of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Le Puy-en-Velay attracts thousands of visitors every year. Perched at 630 metres, the town was built on the cooled lava of a volcano. Its rich heritage makes it an essential stop-off point around Clermont-Ferrand. You can admire the sublime cathedral, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, or take a stroll along its cobbled streets.

Travel7.png

The Auvergne Colorado

In the heart of the Puy-de-Dôme and very close to our wedding reception is the Vallée des Saints, an extraordinary place. Starting from the village of Boudes, a path surrounded by vineyards will take you on a tour of these incredible geological formations, sculpted by erosion. Here you can admire fairy chimneys and ochre-coloured canyons, limestone hillsides and saltwater springs. A must-do hike around Clermont-Ferrand!

Travel8.png

Lake Aydat

Summers around Clermont-Ferrand can be scorching (here’s hoping…). Lake Aydat is the largest natural lake in Auvergne. The landscapes surrounding it are splendid and you can spend an incredible day there. If you want to sunbathe and enjoy a swim, there are beaches just for you. But if you're feeling restless, there are plenty of activities on offer, including sailing, kayaking, rowing and fishing. You can also take the path around the lake, which makes for a great walk!

Travel2.png

Climbing the Puy de Sancy â€‹

At 1,886 metres, Puy de Sancy is the highest peak in the Massif Central. The view from its summit gives you a bird's eye view of 1/7th of France! It's a difficult climb (around 3h30mn) and only suitable for the more athletic climbers but scenery is stunning (waterfalls, steep valleys, steep cliffs). Others can take the cable car up the mountain.

Local Delicacies

As a volcanic region with an abundance of water, Auvergne is a fertile land. What's more, its cool, wet mountain climate is ideal for farming and livestock rearing. This has led to the development of a generous gastronomic heritage. This richly flavoured region boasts many culinary specialties to delight your palate:

food1.png

Charcuterie

Since 2015, charcuterie from the Auvergne has been certified PGI, the symbol of quality in Europe. Faithful to the image of the region, all the products are distinguished by their authentic and delicious flavours. They are the fruit of unique know-how, and are obtained through special curing and maturing processes. If you love good food, you'll be spoilt for choice with traditional sausages, blueberry-flavoured sausages, cured ham, homemade Saint-Nectaire terrine, dry sausages and more.

food2.png

Saint-Nectaire

Auvergne alone accounts for 25% of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheeses produced in France. Saint-Nectaire is one of the best-known and most popular cheeses It stands out for its mildness and variety of flavours. It's found on every table, at home and in restaurants. It goes perfectly with a wide variety of recipes and is often served with nuts.

food3.png

Cantal  â€‹

Cantal is produced in the Department of the same name (where Audrey comes from) and is also protected by a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). It is made from cow's milk and matured for at least three months. It has a hard, compact texture and a yellow, grainy rind. Cantal is particularly appreciated for its unique flavour, which can vary according to the degree of maturing. There are two varieties of Cantal: Cantal Jeune, which has a milder taste and texture, and Cantal Vieux, which is drier and more aromatic. Cantal is often served sliced, accompanied by bread and red wine.

food4.png

Truffade

Tasting a truffade is a must! It's one of the region's most emblematic dishes. It is prepared with roast potatoes and cheese. More specifically, it is made with fresh Cantal tomme and potatoes simmered in poultry fat. Often served with plain salad or a bit of ham – it’s a treat!

food5.png

Aligot

This recipe comes from Aubrac another Department in the south of the region. Aligot is mashed potatoes mixed with fresh Cantal tomme cheese. It has first been creamed and seasoned. Then garlic is added for extra flavour. It is usually eaten with sausage, a real treat for lovers of good flavours. You’ll get to taste some at our wedding.

food6.png

Beef

The vast expanses of land in Auvergne are ideal for livestock farming. Auvergne’s meat is one of the best in France in terms of quality and flavour. It comes in all sorts of variations. Depending on your tastes, you can choose between Aubrac and Salers. The latter is the local breed par excellence. These magnificent animals are easily recognised by their famous red coat and their long horns.

food7.png

Pounti

Like truffade and aligot, Pounti is one of Auvergne's oldest and most typical dishes. Unlike the first two, it can be eaten hot or cold as a starter. If you're passing through Clermont or any other town in the region, you must try this traditional type of pâté. A gourmet speciality, Pounti is made with eggs, wheat flour and milk. Bacon, chard and prunes are then added to the mixture.

food8.png

Puy lentils

Puy lentils are green lentils typical of the region. Because they are planted in volcanic soil, they stand out for their quality and authenticity. What's more, they have a PDO too. You can use them to prepare a wide range of recipes, such as Auvergne lentil salad, petit salé with lentils or green lentil tart.

food9.png

Farçou

You’ll find them on a local market as a snack to eat! It's a mixture of chard, parsley, garlic and eggs. Some also add milk, and for meat lovers there are farçous prepared with smoked bacon or sausage. They’re Yumilicious!

food10.png

Mineral water and beer

Auvergne has always been synonymous with water. There are many mineral water springs in the region. Le Mont-Dore water, drawn directly from La Montille in the Sancy, is perfect for accompanying the various recipes of Auvergne cuisine.

This low-mineral spring water is world-renowned for its purity and mild flavour. So is Volvic, which you all know! What's more, quality water often goes hand in hand with delectable craft beer.

The region boasts a number of renowned breweries offering local specialties. Beers from Auvergne, such as gentian beer, have flavours that are both original and exquisite.

There are plenty of Auvergne IPAs (India Pale Ale) to discover during your stay and during our ceremony.
